I teach so that a student can defend a result without borrowing my procedure. A lab fails at a specific step; I record that step, rewrite the material, and treat the next cohort as the test of whether the failure was diagnosed. Mentorship is the same claim at smaller scale: more than 200 junior researchers, and course materials and curriculum standards produced from observed failure rather than from a syllabus that had not yet met the student.
